There are a number of ways that you can get photos for your website. The easiest of course, is with your own camera. This will allow you to get photos of your actual business instead of someone else's used or purchased photos. It will give you exclusivity of the photos taken, because the exact photo will not appear on another website.

Is it best to use a professional photographer, to take photos for my website?

Depending on the photographer, some can get very expensive. However, one thing that a professional photographer does, is take great photographs. So in a way, it all depends on you. Do you feel that you need quality photos taken by a professional photographer, or do you feel that your digital camera can do the trick. It's your own decision.

Why do some companies or photographers charge a lot of money for some stock photos?

Some stock photo supplier companies and some photographers who have created their own website, will often charge a high fee for a stock photo that has exclusivity. That means that no one else has ever purchased that image or can purchase that image, after you purchase it. The main advantage of these exclusive photos, is that once you have purchased the photo, it is not legally allowed to appear on another website.
